First Birthday Gift Ideas: Personalised Keepsakes
Toys get forgotten by two. Here are first birthday gifts that don't: personalised pyjamas, comforters and blankets, made to be kept for years.
A first birthday is a strange one to buy for. The birthday child won’t remember a single present, and by their second birthday most of this year’s toys will be gathering dust. If you’d rather give something that earns a spot in the memory box (not the charity bag), here’s what we make most for the big day itself.
Why a keepsake beats another toy
Most first birthdays produce a mountain of toys, half of which get outgrown within weeks. A personalised piece does something different: it’s tied to that exact age, that exact name, that exact year, so it becomes part of the story rather than one more thing in the box. It’s also, frankly, the gift parents are quietly gladdest to receive: one less toy to find room for, one more thing worth keeping.
The cake smash outfit
Nearly every first birthday now has its cake smash moment, and it deserves proper photos. Our first birthday pyjamas in the woodland design are embroidered with the birthday child’s name and age, soft enough for an evening in front of the cake and smart enough to survive the photos. For something smaller and no less thoughtful, the first birthday cupcake bib or the plainer first birthday bib both do the job at a friendlier price for extended family and friends to give.
A comforter for the years after
The outfit gets worn once; a comforter gets carried everywhere for the next three or four years. Ours are embroidered with a name in the corner and come in enough characters to suit most tastes. The personalised animal comforter is a longtime favourite, and the personalised bunny comforter is a gentler, softer option for a first “lovey.” It’s the sort of gift that looks small when it’s unwrapped and turns out to be the thing they can’t sleep without.
Something to keep, not use
If you’d like to give something that isn’t meant for daily wear and tear at all, a blanket with the child’s initial does that job beautifully. The personalised goose initial blanket is embroidered rather than printed, so it holds up to being framed, folded away, or brought back out for a second child one day: a gift built to outlast the birthday itself.
For Irish families
If there’s Irish heritage in the family, a first birthday is a lovely excuse to add a little of it to the gift. Our Irish collection carries the Claddagh (love, loyalty and friendship) on blankets, bibs and comforters, each embroidered with the child’s name. (We’ve written before about what the Claddagh actually means, if you’d like the full story before you buy.)
When to order
Everything here is made to order and embroidered by hand, so the earlier you can get in touch the better, especially around the busier months. If the date is close, get in touch and we’ll be upfront about what we can turn around in time.
