The Claddagh Explained: Irish Baby Gift Traditions

Love, loyalty and friendship: what the Claddagh means, where it comes from, and why it makes such a meaningful personalised gift for a new baby.

If you’ve browsed our Irish collection, you’ll have seen the same beautiful symbol again and again: two hands holding a crowned heart. That’s the Claddagh, and for hundreds of years it has carried one of the loveliest meanings in Irish tradition, which is exactly why we stitch it onto keepsakes for brand-new arrivals.

What the Claddagh means

Each part of the design carries its own promise:

  • The hands stand for friendship (cairdeas)
  • The heart stands for love (grá)
  • The crown stands for loyalty (dílseacht)

Together they say, in one small symbol, everything you’d wish for a new baby: to be loved, to be loyal and to be surrounded by friends. It’s a blessing you can wrap them up in, quite literally, when it’s embroidered on a blanket.

Where it comes from

The design takes its name from Claddagh, an old fishing village on the edge of Galway, where the famous Claddagh ring first appeared over three hundred years ago. Traditionally the rings were passed down through families: a piece of home handed from one generation to the next, and carried across the world by Irish families wherever they settled.

That’s the part we love most: the Claddagh has always been about passing something on. Which is exactly what a christening blanket or a first keepsake is for.

Why it works so beautifully for baby gifts

A personalised Claddagh gift does two jobs at once. It marks the occasion (a birth, a christening, a first Christmas) and it quietly carries the family’s story: Irish roots, or a connection to Ireland, stitched in alongside the baby’s name.

Making it personal

Every piece in our Irish collection is embroidered to order. Add a first name, or a name with birth details; choose your thread colours; and if you’d like the message as Gaeilge, we love doing that too, from “Is Mise” sleepsuits to “Is Ainm Dom” bibs.

However you personalise it, the idea is the same one those Galway families had all those years ago: love, loyalty and friendship, made to be handed on.
