What to Embroider on a Baby Blanket: Names & Ideas
First name, full birth details, or just an initial? How to choose what goes on a personalised baby blanket, and the little details worth getting right.
The blanket’s chosen, the colours are picked, and then comes the box that stops everyone: what would you like embroidered? It seems like the easy part until the cursor is blinking at you. Having stitched hundreds of blankets, here’s our honest guide to what works, what to double-check, and what people wish they’d done.
The classic: just the name
You can’t go wrong with a first name on its own. It’s clean, it never dates, and it makes the blanket unmistakably theirs from the very first day. This is the choice we’d suggest for gifts especially: it’s personal without needing information you might not have to hand. Any of our personalised baby blankets can carry a single name beautifully.
The keepsake: name and birth details
Add the date of birth (and, if you like, the birth weight) and the blanket quietly becomes a birth announcement that lasts forever. Twenty years from now, those details are the ones that make people go quiet when they pick it up. Our name and birth details blanket is designed exactly for this. One honest tip: if you’re gifting, confirm the details with the parents first. A beautiful blanket with the wrong weight on it is a story, but not the good kind.
The understated: an initial
A single letter suits families who prefer things simple, and it’s a lovely option when a baby’s name is still a closely guarded secret. An initial with a small motif (a bear, a bunny, a flower) gives the blanket personality without a full announcement.
Spelling, fadas and double-checking
The unglamorous bit that matters most: spelling. Check it, then check it again, especially with names that have more than one accepted form. And if the name carries a fada (Seán, Méabh, Mairéad), tell us when you order, because we’ll stitch it exactly as it should be. It’s a small mark that means a great deal, and we never want a blanket to arrive without it.
Thread colour and lettering
Most of our blankets offer a choice of thread colours, and the same name can feel completely different stitched in soft neutral versus a bold contrast. If you’re unsure, tone-on-tone is the safe, elegant choice; contrast is the photogenic one. On pieces like our knitted frill blanket, the script lettering does the decorative work all by itself.
If you truly can’t decide
Two ways out. The first: choose the design you love and keep the personalisation to just the name; you can always add dates to a christening or first-birthday gift later. The second, for the adventurous: our mystery personalised blanket. Tell us the name and whether it’s for a boy, girl or neutral, and let us surprise you.
Still weighing it up for a particular gift? Get in touch and tell us the occasion. We’ve stitched enough blankets to have an opinion, and we’re happy to share it.
